A shirt worn by football legend Pele during the 1965-66 international season has been sold at auction for an impressive £12,750.
The iconic yellow jersey was donned by the late footy legend, who passed away at the age of 82 last December after battling cancer. Pele is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time.
Despite bearing a conspicuous stain on the front, the shirt remains a treasured piece of memorabilia. Its distinct features include a green collar and sleeves, capturing the essence of the era.
Anticipation surrounded the auction, with an estimated value of over £15,000. The final sale took place at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, California, alongside various other items of sports memorabilia.
Among the coveted items, the most valuable was a collection of Jockey trophies once owned by the late champion Bill Hartack, selling for an impressive £248,000. Additionally, a jersey signed by basketball icon Michael Jordan fetched £81,600.
The description of the Pele shirt listed it as an Athleta brand Brazil jersey, specifically worn by Pele during the 1965-66 international season. Pele’s remarkable career includes three World Cup victories and an astounding record of 77 goals in 92 appearances between 1957 and 1971.
Interestingly, Pele presented this particular jersey to his former Santos teammate Afonso Celso Garcia Reis, known as Afonsinho, who also had a notable football career spanning various clubs including American Mineiro, Asco, Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminese, Olaria, and Madureira.
The authenticity of the shirt is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from MEARS and a Letter of Provenance from Afonso “Afonsinho” Celso Garcia Reis’ sister, further solidifying its historical significance.
The sale of Pele’s stained shirt not only commemorates the unparalleled career of a football legend but also serves as a testament to the enduring value and admiration associated with his sporting legacy.
