Tourism Website goes live

www.newquay.co.uk will go live on the web today. Businessman Mike McLaren began the site as a joint venture with Quintdown Web"s John Jay and Rick Pearce.

Rowing Club presentations

First presentation of the afternoon was to the first team, who came sixth amongst fierce competition at last year’s national Pilot Gig championships.
The crew consisted of D Yelland, M Robins, R Pender, P Nkwo, R King, A Trebilcock and C Tilyard. Presented by John Bawden.
Glasses were then presented by John Cuthill to the year’s lady rower, Mel Flynn, and Derek Applewhite was presented with both the ladies and mens cox awards.
A cheque for £1100 was presented to the mental health charity MIND, which was raised with an overnight lock-in at the harbour tunnel by members last year.
Two cheques were then presented to Children’s Hospice South West. The first, for £1000 was collected by the rowing club singers through performing at the clubhouse, as well as other bars and establishments across the town.
The second, also for £1000 was raised after a sponsored gig row from Newquay to the Isles of Scilly. Mary Murfin from Children’s Hospice South West was on hand to accept the cheques.

Lions Dinner Dance

Newquay Lions held their annual charter evening at the Carnmarth Hotel.

Discussions on the future of Newquay

A parish plan for Newquay was discussed at the Griffin Inn on Saturday. Attended by local residents, facilitator Mark Goodman led the group into workshop discussing topics from social, economy to young people.

Newquay Town Band Awards

Members of Newquay Band were congratulated for their talents at its recent annual awards evening.
Newquay Band chairman Tony Bullows welcomed guests to the Griffin Inn, presenting musical director Linda Trethewey with a bouquet of flowers and thanking her for her hard work during the year.
Bandperson of the year went to bass player and treasurer Dave Becker, while the musical director"s award went to Phil Cole who plays solo horn. Young bandperson of the year went to Jake Blum, who plays euphonium for the junior band and has now joined the senior band to play Bb bass.
Press officer Liz Carne commented: "The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by about 40 band members, and their families.
The trombone section of the band also presented a gift to Don Waters, an accomplished retired trombone player who gives up his Saturday mornings to teach each week.
