Ralph retires after 50 years serving community
STEPPING DOWN: Ralph Keam

A FORMER Restormel mayor and longstanding member of Luxulyan Parish Council has retired after serving the community for half a century.

Ralph Keam, who lives in Rosemelling, jumped at the opportunity to become a parish councillor when he was approached about joining 53 years ago.

Ralph has served on the parish council since 1964 and during those 53 years he was chairman for 20 years.

He was also on Restormel Borough Council for 32 years being mayor in 1983 and made honorary alderman in 2007.

Ralph was also involved with the Working Men’s Institute and was honorary treasurer for 64 years as well as being a long serving trustee and lifetime member.

Members of the Luxulyan Parish Council and Working Men’s Institute gathered to pay their respects and mark the retirement of Ralph Keam after a lifetime of service to the community.

He was presented with an inscribed rose bowl and his wife, Vera, given a bouquet of flowers.

The 90-year-old told the Voice: “I was always interested in the affairs of the village and in 1964 there was a vacancy on the parish council and I was asked to join. I jumped at the chance.

“I have enjoyed it ever since. I have decided it is time to retire as my age plays a part and my health. I am very reluctant to retire.

“I have enjoyed it ever so much and I would do it all again. I am very sorry I have to give it up.”
