‘Newquay Bomb’ in shape of his life ahead of biggest test
KNOCKOUT SHOW: Newquay boxer Brad Pauls continues his quest for titles this Saturday

FORMER Newquay amateur boxer Brad Pauls admits he has ‘never been so motivated’ as he prepares for the biggest test of his unblemished professional career.

The ‘Newquay Bomb’, who boasts an impressive unbeaten record after eight bouts in the pro ring, makes his debut at 10 rounds against Diego Burton in a southern area middleweight title eliminator in London’s Bethnal Green this Saturday evening.

Burton, seven years Pauls’ elder at 31, holds a greater deal of experience but Brad’s explosive style - which has seen him record five knockouts in his eight fights - will stand him in good stead as he looks to continue his journey towards the prestigious southern area belt.

Pauls’ passion for the sport began at Newquay Amateur Boxing club at the age of 10. Now based in Essex, he has seized each opportunity that has come his way, winning his first 12 fights as an amateur, half of them by knockout, earning him his first national title.

Having since turned pro with the highly respected Goodwin Promotions, Pauls said: “I always thought I was Ricky Hatton when I was younger, none of my family has boxed, its either in your or it’s not.

“I trained with Gareth Young and all the coaches at Newquay ABC, they have done a lot for me and I am very grateful to Anthony Mackellar, Nathaniel Hooton, people like this. Then when I left there when I was 18, I went up country (and worked with) Stuart Gill, Kev Bell. All I needed was the opportunity. In my first season I won my first 12 fights, half of them by knockout and got a national title.

“My next fight is March 10, a southern area title eliminator and I am fighting Diego Burton. Winning this gives me the shot at the southern area title. It is my first step and my first real test as a professional.

“Diego is a very credible, tough opponent who has picked me because he things he can beat me. I think otherwise.

“The southern area title is a very prestigious title. A lot of big names have won it and it’s a little bit of an acid to test to find out how good I am. If I’m not good, it is going to get found out on March 10, if I am not who I think I am it is going to get found out. I have trained accordingly, I have trained for 10 rounds, I have done everything. I have never been so motivated, hit numbers that I’ve never hit. On March 10 we will see where my career is going and I believe it is only going to be a win for me.”

Pauls was speaking in a promotional video shot and directed in and around Newquay by Graham Cullis, titled ‘This is Brad Pauls...(thinking otherwise)’, which can be found on YouTube.

The fight forms part of the Jack Green promoted ‘Strike Force’ event. There are currently three title fights on the card with more to be added plus a stacked undercard including some of the UK’s top prospects.
