Hornets fight back from 13-0 down to win gripping contest
BOILING POINT: Tempers frayed at the Sports Centre as the Newquay Hornets took on Cornish League rivals Veor

A YOUNG Newquay Hornets side dug deep and defended well to fightback from 0-13 down to beat Veor at the Sports Centre.

The Hornets entertained Veor at the Sports Centre and were in for a tough encounter from the start. Veor, with the heavier pack and more experienced side, were soon on the scoreboard with two quick penalties and with only 20 minutes gone they went 0-13 up with an interception try. The Hornets kept the score to 0-13 at half-time. The coaches must of had a few words of wisdom to say at the break because, within five minutes of the restart/ Newquay’s number seven Logan Ward crossed the line for a try.

Still grinning from his first try, Ward then collected the ball on the halfway line, out sprinting the Veor defence to score a converted try under the posts. Veor then replied with a penalty to make the score 12-16.

The Hornets stepped up a gear and Veor were starting to show cracks. Newquay's flamboyant number nine Dave Rich couldn't believe his luck when the Veor defence parted down the middle to allow him to score under the posts. It was then a lovely run down the pitch by Cody Hill who set up the next try for veteran Brad Rossborough to score and steal the glory.

Hornets then finished Veor off with the final try of the game scored by Jake Perkins and the conversion kicked by Cody Hill making the final score 36-16. Newquay travel away to Bodmin next week in what will be the hardest test so far this season, Bodmin having come down a league from last season.

Scorers: Tries Logan Ward (2), Brad Rossborough (2), Jake Perkins, Dave Rich Conversions Cody Hill (3)
