RECORD BREAKER: Tommy Gee, seen here hard at work, was joined by 83-year-old duo Graham Cooper and Mike Hurley for the attempt

AFTER setting two world records in 2016, local rower Tommy Gee has added another string to his considerable bow.

His Newquay Indoor Rowing Club hosted three crews to race in relay teams over a distance of 100,000 metres. They comprised of a 70 and over men’s ‘large’ team (over 10 crew members), a 60 and over men’s crew and a 60 and over ladies with participants coming from as far afield as Scotland and France.

Newquay was well represented by Gee, Ted Taylor, Andy Cole, Steve Carey and Norman Trebilcock in the mens and by Kris Jane in the ladies.

The event - sponsored by Steve Amor at the Griffin Inn, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Pauline’s Creamery, Andy’s Cafe and No Worries - was held in the Griffin Inn and raised funds for local charity FLEET. Eventually, a sum of £470.50 was raised.

The times achieved were five hours, 45 minutes and 8.1 seconds in the 70+, five hours, 26 minutes and 54.3 seconds in the 60+ and six hours and 39.3 seconds in the ladies - all of which have been ratified as bona fide world records.

The day was rounded off, once again, by Amor and his team providing a slap up dinner with odd celebratory beverage or two. More events are pencilled in for the future. Keep an eye on your weekly NewquayVoice for all the latest information.
