Tournament celebrates traditional wrestling in the Duchy
GRAPPLING ON THE GREEN: Wrestlers of all ages entered the Cornish wrestling tournament held in St Mawgan

CORNISH wrestlers from all over the county descended on St Mawgan for the village’s annual wrestling tournament, celebrating and preserving the ancient Celtic martial art.

Wrestlers of all ages entered in eight classes in a bid to win at the Grand Tournament, a very good crowd gathered despite not being the best of weather and they were determined to enjoy a fine afternoon's wrestling on the village green, making the most of the refreshments, pasties and cakes. The furthest competitor visited from Sidmouth, Devon, where wrestling used to take place.

This tournament, staged by the St Mawgan Wrestling Committee (SMWC), continues to go from strength to strength with generous prize money and a fine array of trophies for competitors making this a special tournament. The wrestling even over-ran due to the increased number of wrestlers this year. The event is made possible by the continued support from sponsors in the community such as the Merrymoor and Falcon Inns, Atlantic Lanes Bowling, St Mawgan Village Stores and the Cornwall Heritage Trust who kindly sponsor all six of the youth classes.
