SAINTS SCORE: St Newlyn East picked up one win and a loss from their busy Bank Holiday weekend

You win some and you lose some as St Newlyn East found out during their two games over the Bank Holiday weekend, chasing near identical scores with varying success.

On Saturday, Newlyn travelled to Beacon. After picking up three wickets fairly early a big partnership from David Wells (49 no) and Steve Proctor (60 no) pushed Beacon to 198 for 3.
Newlyn in reply lost opener Alan Martyn to the bowling of Richard White for eight.

A solid partnership between Joe Martyn and Oliver Bennett-Hughes of 126 set the game nicely for Newlyn before Martyn fell for 69. Bennett-Hughes, joined by all rounder Jack Thompson, took the Saints over the line with time to spare.

Beacon 198 for 3 (S Proctor 60no, D Wells 49) St Newlyn East 199 for 2 (J Martyn 69, O Bennett-Hughes 60

The following Monday, Newlyn were put in to the field by St Buryan and took a wicket in the first over (caught by Neil Curnow off Kevin Gibbard).

A big partnership followed by Trevor Cotton and Jowan Stedmon put St Buryan in a strong position before a good fight back from Newlyn’s bowlers, especially Henry Bennett-Hughes taking 2-26 and Gary Thompson 3-20, restricted St Buryan for 195 for 8.

Newlyn’s reply was a poor one. Openers Martyn and Curnow fell cheaply before Sean Atkinson blew away the middle order in three balls. Oliver Bennett-Hughes batted well showing great character but with no support. Newlyn were eventually bowled out for 125.

St Buryan 195 for 8 (T Cotton 80no, J Steadman 42  G Thompson 3-20, H Bennett Hughes 2-26) St Newlyn East 125 all out (O Bennett-Hughes 53 M Odendaal 5-31, S Atkinson 3-24)
