WINNING FEELING: The players of St Newlyn East Cricket Club embrace after beating Mount Ambrose

ST NEWLYN East played host to Mount Ambrose in the club's first home game of the season and found their visitors’ top order showing swashbuckling adventure.

Dave Battison and Mark Leigh, after taking the attack to Newlyn’s openers Kevin Gibbard and Jack Thompson, found the boundary regularly before falling to good balls from skipper Robin Miller and Rich Bradder.

After a good start from Mount Ambrose, some disciplined bowling turned 115-3 to 148 all out. Notable performance came from 17-year-old debutant Henry Bennett-Hughes who took four wickets, conceding just 11 runs.

Newlyn got off to a flying start with an opening partnership of 85 between Neil Curnow and Joe Martyn before Martyn was removed LBW by Battinson for 35.

Halfway to the target and way above the run rate, the over eagerness from Newlyn East batsmen to get the game finished quickly gifted Mount Ambrose three cheap wickets before Neil Curnow chipped away at the target with a collection of occasional boundaries and nurdling singles finishing with 69 not out.
