THE 2017 Atlantic Freestyle Football Tour kicked off in superb style with crowning of the competition's first ever international winner.

Scores of freestylers from across the world descended on Fistral Beach to take part in the first event of a three-legged tour, making up the inaugural Atlantic Freestyle Football Open.

Dutchman Jesse Marlet wowed the prestigious judging panel and took the Open and Sick 3 titles, with Irishman Conor Reynolds earning the Challenge spoils, both displaying an incredible range of skills and talent.

Hundreds of spectators took in the excitement against the stunning backdrop of ThunderCat Racing UK, who thrashed their high-speed power boats along the shoreline, creating a unique atmosphere.

Organiser Jason Heaton said: “I would like to give a massive thank you to everyone that made this possible. The NewquayVoice, DJ Angel for her seven hour set on the day which is just incredible and absolutely made it happen.

“ThunderCat Racing UK for the opportunity to go along with them, their help to get on the national tour and for an incredible exchange of community. C6(n) for the stage which is unparalleled and one that everyone loves. It really did inspire everyone.

“Gareth Jeans for his organising prowess and dogged determination to make things happen. Precision Soccer for helping to double the size of our operations and back up our inclusive philosophy with so much fun.

“Big thanks to Sam Millington for her creative genius and providing a trophy of real magnitude. Equally to Buzz Interactive for their web and tech support. Conor Reynolds for organising the judges and persuading Jesse Marlet to come over from Holland.

“Also, every one of the competitors whose love for the sport means we have an international competition with an international winner for the first time. The level of competition was exceptional but so was  the desire to share and grow the sport.”

Judge Luca Chiarvesio, the current Italian and World Challenge champion, said: "Massive thanks to Jason for organising the whole thing and for the help he has offered to all of us in the past days. Even through the quantity of players wasn't the highest even, I had a blast judging this competition and it was my favourite time ever as a judge. You really can't fully appreciate the beauty of the location from the videos."

Multiple World and British champion Andrew Henderson, who spent time meeting locals as well as providing professional level support to the team, said: "I had a great time back in the county that I grew up in supporting the local freestyle football scene and international athletes coming down for the event at the weekend."

Ashraf Yousef traveled all the way from Egypt to play his part in the event, saying: "AFFO was such an amazing event with good vibes. Big thanks to Atlantic Freestyle…looking forward to the UK champs next month."

The next tour event takes place in Bournemouth, in-corporating the British and Irish Championships, on the weekend of May 20. Heaton concluded: “Thanks to my family for their love and generosity in giving their time and making sure I had mine for this amazing adventure.

“Finally, thank you to the friends we've made along the way for your generous support. Now we go on to the UK and Irish Championship in Bournemouth.”
