Tributes paid to Newquay stalwart

Tributes paid to Newquay stalwart
Brian Start who passed away last week.

A prominent Newquay businessman who generously gave a lot of his time raising money for charity passed away on Friday.

Brian Start, who founded the estate agents Start & Co in Cliff Road, died peacefully at home with his family by his side.

The 76-year-old was a longstanding member of Newquay Round Table, The 41 Club and was a trustee of Newquay Hydrotherapy Pool. He used his persuasive talents to raise tens of thousands of pounds for various good causes during numerous auctions over the years, including CLIC Sargent, the RNLI and Children’s Hospice South West.

Brian also helped establish the Senior Citizens Centre in St Michael’s Road, the annual Newquay Rotary Club Christmas tree in Bank Street as well as the Newquay Golf Day to raise funds.

Brian moved to Newquay aged nine with his mum and two older sisters after his father was killed in the Second World War. He left school at the age of 16 and went to work at Edward’s paper shop and for Oxenberry’s frozen food deliveries.

Brian met his wife Marilyn and he started work for John Julian Estate Agency before the couple decided to set up their own estate agents business. Start & Co initially opened in Cliff Road in 1977 in what was the smallest office in the town, which is now a sandwich bar, before the business moved across the road where it has gone from strength to strength.

Brian and Marilyn had two sons, Bradley and Jonathon, who have helped the family business thrive. Brian worked up until his death and recently oversaw Start & Co move into new
premises on Cliff Road.

Bradley said: “Dad was a proud and long-standing member over the years of Newquay Round Table, 41 Club and, most recently, the Rotary Club of Newquay.

“He started Start & Co with mum in 1977 and has worked there ever since. He said retirement was for old people! His work for charity was extensive and quietly undertaken but he was a passionate trustee for the Newquay Hydrotherapy Pool, along with conducting annual auctions for many years for CLIC and the RNLI amongst others.

“He always made himself available for charity auctions, particularly when they were locally focused. His most recent was held on November 25.  He will be greatly missed by his very close family and friends.”

Brian’s funeral will be held at St Michael’s Church in St Michael’s Road on Friday (January 12) at 3pm. The Start & Co offices will be shut during the day as a mark of respect and remembrance.
