Fishermen will be faces of 2018

NEWQUAY’S fishermen will be in the spotlight next year when they appear in a limited edition charity calendar.

A number of local fishermen will grace the pages of a 2018 calendar created to raise funds for the Fishermen’s Mission – a UK- wide charity which is committed to providing emergency support alongside practical, financial and emotional care for both active and retired fisherman and their families and those that have fallen on hard times.

The limited-edition calendar has been commissioned by J. Sheekey, a historic fish and seafood restaurant in central London, as a way of helping the charity but also to celebrate the men and women who supply its menu. The ‘Seas the Day’ calendar aims to recognise the efforts of fishermen all over the UK by showcasing their working lives and the turbulent conditions under which they work.

Front of house manager, John Andrews, said: “At J Sheekey, we are able to serve the best seafood in the country, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the fishermen and women that bravely work at sea each day. We often take for granted where the delicious food on our plates comes from, so with this calendar we can support and praise some of the UK’s best sea crews through this fantastic partnership with the Fishermen’s Mission.”

The calendar features a number of familiar faces, all photographed by Harry Borden, one of the UK’s finest portrait photographers. Harry said: “I’ve often captured fishermen at sea for photoshoots and I see the hard work which goes into sourcing seafood for restaurants, and it’s no mean feat. I feel completely privileged to be able to honour the hard work of these men and women and it is with great joy knowing that the proceeds will go directly towards supporting them and their families.”

Phil Trebilcock, who appears in the calendar, said: “The photographer came down about three weeks ago and asked us to just walk around the harbour in our kit. There was not much modelling involved, although we weren’t allowed to smile. Everybody seems really happy with their shots. Those who took part received a copy of the calendar and there’s been no complaints.
“It’s been a good experience. I was invited to the launch party at J Sheekey, where I got to meet some of the chefs and people from the Fishermen’s Mission. All the proceeds are going to the Mission, which is an important cause, so we were all happy to be involved. We’re now just in the process of trying to organise how we can make the calendars available down here.”
The J Sheekey Fisherman’s Calendar features 12 fishermen from across four UK fishing hotspots.
J Sheekey and the Fishermen’s Mission say they have worked closely on the creation of the calendar.

Ali Godfrey, director of Business Development, explained: “We are so excited to partner with the wonderful J Sheekey restaurant to create a calendar which will directly support the fishermen and women who provide the delicious seafood customers enjoy on a daily basis. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished result and our brave and hardworking fishermen and women being put on the map.”
l The J Sheekey Fisherman’s Calendar will be available from next week to purchase from and in the restaurant.
They will also be available locally, with more details to come. All proceeds will go directly to The Fishermen’s Mission.
