Johnny´s celebrates Stoptober!

Johnny´s celebrates Stoptober!
Johnny´s Tobacconist on Bank Street led the vaping revolution...

One of Newquay’s oldest businesses, Johnny’s Tobacconist, will be celebrating Stoptober this year with all the customers they have helped make the switch from smoking cigarettes and tobacco to vaping.

The shop, situated on Bank Street, started selling electronic smoking products over ten years ago and is Newquay’s original and only independent vape specialist.  In fact it was so long ago the word vape didn’t even exist yet!

Since then they have helped thousands of people kick the tobacco habit and replace cigarettes with the much cheaper, less harmful alternative, but owner of Johnny’s, Jess Parkin says it all started with an unusual request from a customer.

“We were never much in the business of trying to help people give up smoking tobacco for obvious reasons,” says Jess.

“But we had one very good customer who was diagnosed with a serious medical condition and his doctor told him quite simply if he didn’t stop smoking cigarettes he wouldn’t live longer than a couple of years.  Unfortunately he just couldn’t stop no matter what he tried, gum, patches, you name it he’d tried it.”

He was extremely stressed out and his poor wife was beside herself so I told them I would see if I could help and started researching the very first electronic cigarettes - eleven years later he’s still going strong with a clean bill of health and the rest is history!”

While the technology has moved on a little since then, e-cigarettes, or vapes as they are sometimes known are more popular than ever, particularly after a study by Public Health England suggested that vaping is around 95% less harmful than smoking tobacco and cigarettes.

Stoptober is a 28 day challenge ran by the NHS to help people quit smoking and 2017 will be the first year that the use of e-cigarettes as a tool has been approved by the NHS, visit www.nhs.uk/oneyou/stoptober for more information.
