RETAIL giant Marks & Spencer has signed a contract committing to opening a new store in Fraddon.

The outlet, which will be incorporated within the redevelopment of Kingsley Village, will sell clothing, homeware and include a food hall.

The announcement comes as it is confirmed that a judicial review of the decision to allow redevelopment of the site has been quashed and the new retail park development can proceed.

The developers, Consolidated Property Group (CPG) and Kingsley Development, aim to start onsite early in 2017, subject to the final lettings being agreed and a further planning application to provide flexibility on the remaining floorspace being approved.

Five further operators are lined up to join Marks & Spencer, alongside the existing Next and Starbucks units already trading, and these will be announced as soon as the contracts are finalised. The redevelopment of Kingsley Village, which will be known as the Kingsley Retail Park, will create approximately 300 jobs when the scheme is complete and all the units are fully occupied.

Martin Ridgway, the managing director of Consolidated Property Group, said: “We’re delighted to  have had firm commitment from Marks & Spencer that they will be opening a store in the redevelopment.

“They have been looking for a suitable site to serve this area of Cornwall for several years so this will be good news for local shoppers. Work onsite will start early next year with the first units being occupied from early 2018.”

Rob Morray, the head of property planning at M&S said: “We’re looking forward to bringing the very best of M&S to Kingsley Village and playing a role in the local community. Our new store will sell clothing and home and include a foodhall with our innovative range of fresh food.”

Abe Simpson, from Kingsley Developments, said: “It has been both enjoyable and beneficial working with CPG to deliver what I know to be an important development for mid Cornwall.

“It will provide a real economic boost creating hundreds of careers, not just jobs, for local people with national firms.

“It has been tough work fighting off legal challenges from other national developers, but hopefully we now have an unchallengeable mandate to deliver this important and long-awaited retail development.

“And on a personal note, with my office not far away I can’t wait to shop at M&S!”

Cornwall Council’s strategic planning committee had approved permission for the redevelopment of the former Kingsley Village site in October last year.
