Tributes have been paid to the two sisters killed in a road traffic accident who were, “always ready to listen to others” and will be remembered for their creative and generous spirits. Mothers Janis Cusworth, aged 61 and Carol Jiggins, aged 60, from Newquay died following a head-on collision at Loggans Roundabout, Hayle on Wednesday.
Both sisters were an integral part of community life and happily invested their energy for the benefit of those around them.
Janis was involved in the St Endor Pantomime Players for the last 18 years and was the producer of the last two productions.
Carol was a member of the Tretherras School PTA and helped to launch the very popular craft fairs which have run for the last 20 years and proved hugely beneficial for the school.
The family of both sisters issued a warm tribute to the pair this week. It reads: “As a wife and mother, Janis was warm, caring and supportive of her family. There was never a problem she couldn’t solve or a situation that she could not handle.
"She was also a committed member of the community, and has been involved in the St Endor Pantomime Players for 18 years, producing this year’s 25th anniversary show.”
Within her family Carol was known as an adventurous person who loved living in Cornwall for the outdoor lifestyle it allows.
“Carol was passionate and fun loving,” the family said. “A wonderful mum and partner. She lived in Cornwall for over 30 years and loved the outdoors, walking on the beach and cliffs, scuba diving and swimming. Carol was a hard working independent person who loved travel and adventure. She was very creative and generous and cared deeply for animals, giving many pets a loving home throughout her life. Carol leaves behind a partner, three children, a grandchild and many, many friends who will all miss her deeply.”
In the last two years Janis was the producer for the pantomime productions; ‘Sinbad the Sailor’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.
A member of the St Enoder Pantomime society, Sharon Orchid said that the two sisters were celebrated for their imaginative approach to what they did.
“They were both very creative,” she said. “It is very sad, they were lovely sisters, really easy going, nice people. Janis made some whacky costumes in the past, like one which was a great big piece of cheese, she liked doing different things. I have known Janis for 25 years and I never saw her lose her temper, she was always ready to listen to the views of others.”
As well as helping to organise the craft fairs at Tretherras School, Carol also created some handmade pieces herself.
Steve Dunn, deputy head of Tretherras School and member of the PTA said: “Carol was an asset to the PTA, committed, enthusiastic, but with a real sense of fun. She was one of the team who organised the craft fairs for the last 20 years that have been so successful for the school. Our condolences to the family.”
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident after the vehicle the sisters were travelling in was involved in a head-on collison with an empty petrol tanker at 10.30am
